A Visit to a Cemetary

La Recoleta Cemetery

Today we went to visit the famous Buenos Aires La Recoleta cemetery.  I wasn’t sure what to expect because I hadn’t researched it, but it was like no other cemetery I’ve ever visited before.  Bright and beautiful, it is more inspiring than depressing.

Rows and rows of mausoleums fill the cemetery.  Each is like a mini-museum, you can peek inside most of them to see pictures, paintings, flowers.  Some contain caskets, some sarcophagi, some hide these away underground or in stacked vaults.  Many have intricate stained glass windows in the walls or ceilings, and many have statues or busts outside or on top.  We did not explore the whole cemetery, the rows start to look the same after a while.

Eva Peron is supposed to be buried here, but I did not see any Peron markings, the place is huge!
